Artist Background: Gao Hai Geng (1939-1985) was a distinguished Yixing pottery artist who began his career in 1955 under the mentorship of Gu Jingzhou, a revered master of Yixing clay. Gao was recognized as a prodigious talent in teapot design and was a favored disciple of Gu. His wife, Zhou Guizhen, was also a renowned student of Gu Jingzhou and a celebrated master of Yixing craftsmanship. Gao served as the Director of the Yixing Zisha Art Factory from 1981 to 1985. His works, including the renowned Ji Yu Teapot, are considered masterpieces of Yixing pottery, with the Ji Yu being chosen as a diplomatic gift for foreign dignitaries.
Teapot Name: Chunting, also described as the “Bowl Lamp,” draws inspiration from the shape of ancient oil lamps, symbolizing brightness and the pursuit of family harmony and a peaceful life.
This pair of teapots is a perfect fusion of Chinese cultural elements:
- Teapot One features an engraving of a Tang dynasty poem by Wang Wei:
“The pine wind loosens my belt, the mountain moon lights up my zither.” - Teapot Two is adorned with a Song dynasty verse by Zhao Chong:
“Green bamboo and verdant pines lean over a mountain stream, while scattered duckweed and fragrant reeds drift amidst the mist.”
Both inscriptions are carved in Zhuanshu, an ancient Chinese seal script, reflecting a timeless aesthetic.
The spout rims are meticulously decorated with dragon and phoenix motifs using a Zhuosha carving technique, a highly intricate form of pottery engraving that demands extensive craftsmanship. These symbols, rooted in the I Ching, represent auspicious fortune and high status, embodying wishes for prosperity and harmony. The semi-spherical shape of the teapot, with a bowl-like lower belly, is seamlessly complemented by a straight, elegant spout and handle. The flowing curves transition smoothly, exuding grace. The knob mirrors the teapot’s design in a smaller form, creating a sense of symmetry and balance.
This pair of Chun Ting Teapots is a masterpiece of form and cultural depth, making it a superb choice for tea brewing, collection, and appreciation.
